podcasting my essay… December 12, 2008

Podcasting my essay was a hard task.  1st off, i dont feel comfortable sharing my work with many people.  The idea of having to speak my essay out loud to the computer, with the possibility of other people hearing, was kind of nerve wrecking.  Also, the other fact that we’re sharing it with a New Jersey class, also sort of threw me off a little.  But, podcasting it, is much better then having to speak it out loud to the class which i really do hate doing.  I feel that if i share my work, other people’s will be betterr, and theres obviously that possibility, but i dont like it.  Ive never been good at .. public speaking, ever. and I dont like it.  So the pros of doing a podcast is, you dont have to share it in front of the class.  To me, hearing yourself speak is better then having to speak to the class.  A couple more pros is that, you can make it perfect.  If you’re giving a speech you could mess up words and sentences.  With the Audacity you could just re-record something if you made a mistake.  The cons of doing this? I didnt really like hearing my voice after i was done.   It sounded weird, it was different.  Im glad i didnt have to hear it again. All together i liked podcasting my essay, better then sharing it with the whole class.  Listening to words, is very different then just reading them.  When you listen to someone speak an essay, you can tell the emotion they were feeling when they were writing it.  If you just read the essay in your head, you can’t tell the emotion.  Listening to it, is better then reading it in your head.

World Changing October 21, 2008

The name of this blog is World Changing.  There are many different authors of this blog, but it is mostly written by the “WorldChanging Team”.  The focus of this blog is to educate people about global warming and how it affects our world.  The blog is sort of trying to “change the world”.  It gives out tips of going green and tells you other ways you can help the environment.  It’s a blog where you can learn and be interested all at the same time.  The blog also talks about other wordly issues.  Like, the election, and other important things everyone knows about.   It focuses more on envrionement and seems to strive to educate people about global warming, and what we can do to help the issue. I think the type of people who would read this blog are; people who want to “go green”, people who want to be educated as well as interested in global warming and its effects, and people who want to know what they need to do to help their environment. I think, its very interesting to see what really causes global warming, and how i can help my own environment.  It makes people notice how bad global warming can get, or is getting.  I dont completely understand what you mean by the tone of voice, but ill try.  I believe that the tone, is powerful and interesting.  It doesnt seem like a weak and boring blog.  It seems to have a lot of good potential, and it is somewhat popular (not very popular, but its getting there..) The blog is more educational, but its definitely not boring. The unique part about this blog is the why its educational and interesting all at the same time.  I always thought things that have to do with education are boring.   My reasoning behind this is whenever i think of school, i usually think of lectures.  If a blog were to be sort of like a lecture, but online, itd be boring.  That wouldnt catch my attention, or anyone else’s.  But, this blog is different.  It takes learning and fun into one, and makes it a great blog.  There is a variety of posts that go from, Silver Banks: Clean coal, Cellulosic Biofuel and Hydrogen Cars? (something that is more on the educational side), and there are posts like this; New School Sustainability: Majors Making a Difference, this blog shows how people make a difference in our world.  The blog varies, and thats what makes it interesting.  It doesnt seem like a lecture, or a dictator, it seems interesting.

The Huffington Post is the best blog out of the three.  The Huffington Post seems more professional, and correct.  The Huffington Post is about politics, and focuses on real issues in our world.  The other blogs dont focus on world issues.  It is also the best blog out of the three, because most of the people writing arent just normal people.  Most of them seem to have an important job like authors, producers, scientists, etc. The lifehacker blog, would have to be the second best blog out of the three.  I say this because they still talk about real issues, its just not as important.  Lifehacker has things about how to live your life.  Unimportant people can go on www.lifehacker.com, and make a blog if they want to.  The Huffington Post seems a little bit more professional then www.lifehacker.com. The last blog is Dy/Dan. Dy/Dan is a good blog, but its not that important.  The most things he writes about are teaching and his life.  It seems more like a personal blog, then a serious, professional blog.  That is why i put it third on the best blog list.  The Huffington Post, and LifeHacker, have more world issues, not just personal issues.  Dy/Dan also has world issues, but it just doesnt seem as professional as the other blogs. A good blog usually is written correctly.  It shouldnt have any slang or anything.  It should sound professional, and interesting.  Blogs arent meant to be boring.  If your blog is boring, then its not really a good blog.  The point is to get the reader, to keep on reading.  You can also do this by making a catchy title.  If a blog has a boring title, or no title, readers will not be attracted to it as much. Basically, it should have a good title, and an interesting topic. To me, thats what makes a good blog.

How can you use your blog to learn in class? How can the unique features of a blog be an important part of your learning? What are the benefits and drawbacks of using a blog as part of your learning?

a blog can be used to learn in class because people can post different things on their blogs.  You can learn because if other people have blogs and when they post information, people can learn about what they have to say.  You can learn about your classmates also.  You can also learn other information, that you may not know.  By having a blog in the classroom, it can teach you a lot.  The benefits of using a blog are; you can learn a lot about other classmates & you can learn new information that you didnt know before.  Some drawbacks of relying on a blog are; the information you see could be false.  Even though students posted the blog, it doesnt mean that the information put out there is neccessarily correct.  So, people shouldnt rely on the blogs for information, only some small things.  That is why a blog is good for learning in the classroom.
